Whether you are a jobseeker considering a new role in payroll, or a company looking to employ a payroll professional, it is useful to know key payroll jobs salary information.  As with most other professions, the payroll jobs salaries are contingent upon both the nature of the role itself and the postholder’s experience, with more senior roles commanding a higher salary.

In this Payroll Jobs Salary Guide, we set out each of the most common payroll roles, and the average salary that pertains to it.

Payroll Administrator Salary

A payroll administrator is responsible for processing payroll in a timely and accurate manner. They calculate wages and deductions based on payroll salary, attendance, and timesheet records, and submit this information to Revenue.  They would also be responsible for issuing payslips, completing payroll reports, and maintaining payroll records.

The average payroll administrator salary in Ireland is €29,050 (including bonuses and other compensations), although this is dependent on level of experience.

An entry-level payroll administrator could expect to earn average payroll salary of €25,389.  This increases to €27,613 with 1 – 4 years of experience, and €30,600 based on 5 – 9 years of experience.  An experienced Payroll Administrator with 10 – 19 years of experience could expect to earn an average salary of €34,118.

In terms of skill-related earnings, payroll administrators that are experienced in payroll administration, payroll tax compliance, and human resources are typically paid above-average payroll wages, whereas those whose experience is limited to accounting and Microsoft Excel are generally paid less than the market rate.

Average Salary for Payroll Specialists and Payroll Analysts

A payroll specialist is responsible for processing payroll to ensure that all employees receive accurate payroll wages in a timely manner.  They would also be required to prepare payroll-related reports for use by other departments within the company, and to resolve any day-to-day payroll queries.  Typically regarded as a senior position, a payroll specialist would be expected to develop the payroll function with a focus on continuous improvement, as well as liaise closely with other departments such as HR and finance.

The average payroll salary for this role in Ireland is €34,695 (including bonuses and other compensations), although this is dependent on level of experience.

An entry-level payroll specialist with 1 – 4 years of experience could expect to earn average payroll wages of €32,384, rising to €36,768 based on 5 – 9 years of experience.  An experienced payroll specialist with 10 – 19 years of experience could expect to earn an average salary of €37,321.  Employees with 20+ years of experience could expect to be rewarded with an average payroll salary of €42,494.

Average Salary for Payroll Managers, Payroll Team Leaders, and Senior Payroll Specialists

A payroll manager is responsible for overseeing the payroll function in an organisation and ensuring that all employees are paid accurately and on time.   They would typically manage the rest of the payroll team, as well as resolve employee payroll queries or complaints.  As one of the most senior payroll staff in the organisation, they would be expected to liaise with other departmental heads, Revenue, and external auditors.  They would also be responsible for the development of the department, its processes, and systems, with a strong focus on continuous improvement.

The average payroll salary for this role in Ireland is €43,108 (including bonuses and other compensations), although this is dependent on level of experience.

An entry-level payroll manager with 1 – 4 years of experience could expect to earn an average salary of €39,893, rising to €44,391 based on 5 – 9 years of experience.  Highly experienced Payroll Managers with 10 – 19 years of experience could expect to earn as much as €60,000 – €64,000.

In terms of skill-related earnings, payroll managers that have experience in payroll tax compliance and accounting are typically paid above-average payroll wages, whereas those whose experience is limited to payroll administration are generally paid less than the market rate.
